Local Holidays and Celebrations

19 March is St Joseph's Day, the patron saint of La Herradura:

Its La Herradura fiestas fiestas, cultural activities and sporting events are organized. At night, a multitude of street bars are improvized around the fair ground, beside the beach, in the Andrés Segovia promenade. The focus of the festivities is the religious procession that leaves the church and passes through the old quarter of the village.

Easter:

The Catholic celebration of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ constitutes one of the most beautiful and moving spectacles to be seen anywhere in the world. Numerous fraternities organize the processions , day after day, along streets and through squares, bearing ornate pasos , or thrones, decorated with flowers and religious imagery. The thrones are accompanied by penitents, by the devout of all ages carrying candles and standards, until the early hours of the morning, while music fills the air with emotion and, from time to time, a plaintive saeta , or song from the heart, sung unaccompanied, rises above the town.  Easter Week in Almuñécar is, year after year, bigger and more spectacular, with a growing number of fraternities and processions. For the professionals in the tourist industry this is a prelude to the hectic summer season, when visitors' relax and enjoy lazy summer days, but a lot of work must be done behind the scenes!

[Cruces de Mayo]3 May, Crosses of May:

Every year on 3 May, without fail, we celebrate the Crosses of May.Coinciding with the arrival of the summer solstice, the whole population takes part in a real fanfare of fun. Music sounds from every corner, streets and squares are gaily decorated, people dress up in their traditional costume, and the scent of countless flowers comes from the Crosses around the town; these are made by local residents and decorated with mantillas, agricultural implements, copper kitchen utensils, seashells, and, above all, thousands and thousands of carnations. Plus something special. A pair of shears, open and ready to cut off any excessively prudent "But..."  as regards the Cross and the merrymaking around it .

23 and 24 June, St John's Day

This feast day is very special in Almuñécar, as it marks the beginning of the summer season, and everybody wants to join in the celebrations. On St John's Day, tradition requires everybody to wash their face at midnight in order to look their best for the coming year. In fact, what really happens is that everyone goes down to the sea (just for once, though camping there is prohibited, the authorities turn a blind eye), and spends the night on the beaches of Velilla or El Tesorillo, where several beach bars make sure the night life is lively, bonfires are lit, and at twelve o'clock everybody has a dip in the Mediterranean. The party continues till dawn and later. The strong, armed with sunshades and provisions, then continue during the day!

16 July, the Virgin Carmen, Patron Saint of sailors:

Naturally, in a coastal town, the Feast Day for all the sailors in the world must be an important event, and nowhere more so than in Almuñécar. This is the first festivity during the summer season, and the town is full of visitors. The main act of this special day is the maritime procession, and the focal point of celebrations is the quarter known as "Los Marinos", where fishermen and their families traditionally live.

28 - 30 Septiembre.
