Outstanding among the principal historical monuments of the town is the fortress or castle of San Miguel. It was built over a Nazari site, and has been remodelled by succeeding generations, each leaving their cultural mark. 

These were used during the Moorish occupation to guard the sea approaches, and today can still be found, in a perfect state of conservation, on some beaches in Almuñecar.
