BEACHES OF ALMUÑECAR
Almuñécar possesses 19 km of coast, containing 26 different beaches. Some of these are coves that are hidden away and hard to reach, with their own special charm. Some of these are described below.
Cantarrijan beach
Is the most western beach in Almuñécar. It has all kind of sand.

La Herradura
Four kilometres from Almuñécar lies one of the most picturesque bays in the south.It is sheltered from breezes on both flanks by the hills of Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo, and has outstanding facilities for nautical sports such as sub-aqua. The sand here is semi-coarse.

Los Berengueles Beach

"El Muerto" beach.

Cotobro beach

Cristobal beach
With light-coloured, fairly fine sand. This is in the western part of Almuñécar and is the site of numerous restaurants, beach bars and hotels, meaning the atmosphere is always lively. The far end is also known as La China beach. This beach has been awarded the Blue Flag by the European Union for cleanliness and the quality of its services.

Puerta del Mar

With dark. This is located right in the centre of Almuñécar and certainly the most popular. It is located very near the shopping centre and the heart of the nightlife zone.

Velilla beach
With darker-coloured, slightly coarser sand. This is one of the main beaches of Almuñécar and perhaps the largest. It is protected from the western breezes and becomes very crowded in the summer months, as it is especially convenient for the residents of the many nearby apartment blocks.

Flanked by rocks, and in the eastern part of Almuñécar, lies one of the town's most beautiful beaches. It is the site of one of the ancient Moorish watchtowers, and owes its name to the fact that gold coins were once found at the water's edge.
