The “Loro Sexi” Ornithological Gardens were opened in May 1987, and today hold some 1500 birds, belonging to 200 different species. This fascinating selection ranges from the common dove to the spectacular peacock, and includes colourful parrots, Guacamayo cockatoos, swans, ducks and many more. Especially attractive for children are the ostriches that wander around the park. Over 30,000 visitors a year are proof of the success of the park .

Thanks to the dedicated work of the staff, many birds have bred within the park, which has become firmly established as one of the prime tourist attractions in Almuñécar. It is located on the slopes of the hill below the San Miguel castle, between the Botanical Garden and the Roman fish-curing factory, near the Majuelo Park and Plaza de Abderramán. It is only 100 m from the sea-front, up one of the prettiest footpaths in Almuñécar.

Cactus Garden:

This is another attraction within the Ornithological Park, at the highest part, just below the Moorish walls of the castle. The aridity of the Cactus Garden provides a vivid contrast with the lush greenery of the Majuelo Park and the exuberant sounds rising from the Ornithological Park.
