Municipal Music and Dance School
"Miguel Sánchez Ruzafa"

The Almuñecar Municipal School of Music was founded in 1990. Since then it has provided an outlet for the growing demand for musical training. Particularly important are the roles played by the Town Council in promoting its facilities and the Director of the School, who is the driving force behind its activities and responsible for the quality instruction made available to the greatest possible number of people.

In 1992, the Town Council and the Education Ministry signed an agreement for future collaboration. Relations have been established with the Music Conservatory of Granada, enabling students to take advanced exams and acquire recognized qualifications. In 1996, the Andalusian Regional Government was approached and the status of "Preliminary Conservatory of Music" applied for. In 1998, the functioning of the School is being adapted to conform with the new law of Music Schools - Decree 233/1997, passed on 7 October, which regulates all Schools of Music and Dance in Andalusia

Educational Goals of the School

.    Encourage musical appreciation in young people and adults in Almuñecar.
.    Stimulate the enjoyment of practising both instrumental and vocal music.
.    Support group musical activities as an element of inter-personal solidarity.
.    Offer the population of Almuñecar a wide field of musical activities appealing to all ages and tastes.

In general, the goals of the Centre are to encourage music appreciation and provide practical tuition to all, but particularly the young, and to help people develop a sense of music as an artistic language and means of expression. It offers vocal and instrumental music teaching, as well as specific training in study techniques to enable musicians to advance by their own means. It promotes an interest in musical groups, organizing public performances. Finally, the School helps to bring music to people of all ages and in all sectors of Almuñecar and its surroundings
