International Guitar Award

ANDRÉS SEGOVIA

The friendship of Andrés Segovia, the "maestro"  from Linares, with Francisco Prieto-Moreno Pardo, a great friend and benefactor of La Herradura, dates from the Flamenco Song Festival organized in Granada in 1922 by Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca, with whom Andrés Segovia and many other intellectuals and artists collaborated. Some photographs of picturesque parts of La Herradura, shown by Prieto-Moreno to Andrés Segovia, caused him to fall in love with the town, its land and its people, and he decided to acquire a house in this wonderful part of the country. The master soon found a place in the hearts of the townspeople and, in an extraordinary session of the Almuñecar Town Council, it was decided to declare him adoptive son of the municipality and to change the name of the seafront from “Paseo de La Herradura”  to “Paseo Andrés Segovia”. In the same session, it was also decided to institute the “Andrés Segovia Award” with the aim of recognizing the importance of the Spanish guitar, encouraging its study and honouring the memory of the master from Linares.

Andrés Segovia, very moved, accepted the proposal, but on condition that the Award should demand the highest musical quality of the competing guitarists.

Thus, in January 1985, the First “Andrés Segovia” International Classical Guitar Competition was held, and since then the wishes of the master have been respected, with participants demonstrating the highest musical quality, and thus the event has gained international recognition.
